It is deeply sad that around 700 people are reported to have perished in the Mediterranean sea as a direct result of the actions of criminal human traffickers. This is of course a disaster for humanity and it is now time a co-ordinated effective response is agreed to stop even more deaths.
We need to begin by adding more resources to Frontex the European Agency established to combat illegal immigration into the EU. The EU governments must do more to catch the criminal gangs who are exploiting and making money out of these people.
There is much much more that could be, and should be done to stop that flow of illegal migrants.
Ultimately the solution is in the source countries where the migrants are coming from, and these governments must fulfil their international responsibilities to prevent this illegal trafficking’.
