Ashworth calls for more measures to help British milk industry

BBC Radio Oxford – Concerns about British dairy farming

Richard Ashworth Conservative MEP for South East England and the UK Conservatives spokesman in the European Parliament on Agriculture, said today on BBC Radio Oxford more measures are required to help British dairy farmers.

“Further price cuts to milk, a drop in demand from China, and the Russian trade ban on dairy products have seen margins squeezed tighter than at any other time.   The price cuts which are being imposed are unsustainable and will have a serious impact on the liquidity of many farmers”.

The volatility in the global dairy market has affected severely British farmers and the Russian trade embargo has also exacerbated the continuing fall in global and European dairy markets.

“We need to find a fair solution for British farming with measures that will allow farmers to operate across European and beyond in a way that sustains British farming, and prevents the price war taking place to destroy dairy farming in the UK.”
