Decision to sell Eurostar stake right and proper thing to do

Richard Ashworth Conservative MEP for South East England commenting on the Government’s announcement to sell its share of Eurostar said:

“It is the right and proper thing to do, to sell an asset that will allow the government to pay off some of deficit left by the previous Labour government.  We are a nation that has done very well from privatising state assets, and we are also benefiting from formerly state owned UK utility companies now able to trade in other parts of the European Union and making money for the UK Exchequer.”

“Let’s not forget Eurostar attracts 10 million passengers each year, and if the right buyer emerges Eurostar will be a major asset to any of the major European or international transport companies wanting a foothold in the lucrative cross-channel travel market”.
